Alfred Theodore Joseph Bastien (1873-1955):
- Alfred Theodore Joseph Bastien (1873-1955) was born 16 September 1873 in the town of Ixelles, Belgium.
- He died on 7 January 1955, in the town of Ixelles, Belgium.
- Exceptionally well-known, oft published and very successful Belgian artist.
- Listed in all the major art references, including but not limited to Benezit, Piron, Akoun, etc.
- He primarily favored the mediums of pencil, pen, and oil paint.
- His inimitable sketching and drawing style developed to accommodate rapid and regular publishing of it during the war.
- He as much renowned for his graphic war sketches and grand panoramic depictions as for his sensitive portraits of people and animals, and his gentle landscapes.
Alfred Theodore Joseph Bastien was a contemporary of:
- the sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840–1917),
- the composer Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924),
- and the painter and sculptor Constantin Meunier (1831–1905)
- All of whom were also born in Ixelles.
- Incidentally, also born in Ixelles, and also his contemporary, was the actress, fashion model, and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn (1929–1993).
- There must be something in the Ixelles water!
- After he completed work on a grand 'Panorama du Congo' exhibited at the 1913 Ghent World Fair
- King Albert in 1914 suggested what became his most famous and acclaimed work:
- a massive grand Panorama of the Yser Front.
- After the fall of Antwerp in October 1914,
- he volunteered for the Belgian Army in spite of his age
- and was eventually transferred to the 'Section Artistique' in Nieuwpoort.
- His sketches and drawings were regularly published by magazines during the war,
- particularly the drawings he did depicting the Belgian lines on the Yser river.
- The British war-time magazine 'the Illustrated War News' regularly published his work
- as distinctive semi-panoramic multi-color two-page spreads.
- In 1917, on personal request by Lord Beaverbrook (who owned several of Bastien's pre-war paintings)
- Bastien was seconded to the Canadian Army until September 1918,
- during which time he produced many works of art specifically related to the Canadian war experience.
- He is in the permanent collection of The Canadian War Museum
- as part of the Lord Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.
- He is in the permanent collections of many European museums.
