ABOUT THE ARTIST:

  • Emmy Award winner DONALD DAVIS is considered a national treasure and a legend in his own time.
  • Don is a Fellow of the International Association of Astronomical Artists, the rare cadre of realist space artists.
  • The artist's understanding of, and attention to, scientific detail is legendary even among his fellow space artists.
  • Calling himself  "a visual chronicler of the exploration of space", an asteroid has been named after him 13330dondavis.
  • While still a teenager, he worked at the U.S. Geological Survey doing the first Lunar maps.
  • Few artists are capable of rendering the detail and painstaking accuracy needed for planetary mapping.
  • Don's maps are accurate enough to use for targeting spacecraft. Think about that.

AWARDS , COMMISSIONS, & CITATIONS:

  • The artist won an EMMY award for his ground-breaking work in the classic PBS series COSMOS.
  • On May 13, 2002, he was awarded the prestigious Klumpke-Roberts Award by The Astronomical Society Of The Pacific (ASP).
  • The Klumpke-Roberts Award is presented in recognition of an individual's outstanding contributions to public understanding & appreciation of astronomy.
  • The artist worked on the PBS Planet Earth and Space Age series, on the series LIFE BEYOND EARTH.
  • His work appears in TIME-LIFE BOOKS, the SMITHSONIAN Museum magazine, NATURAL HISTORY and OMNI magazines, just to mention A FEW CREDITS.
  • His recent credits include the animation sequences of the outer reaches of the galaxy for the PBS series THE NIGHT SKY.
  • His film work and animation for NASA's JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) includes the Voyager and Galileo flyby sequences.
  • He worked with the late Carl Sagan, frequently illustrating his books and articles.
  • He collaborated with Sagan on his essays in Sunday PARADE magazine.
  • The artist's work is now primarily digital and is often seen on the Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel in various documentaries on cosmic subjects.
  • He is a master of "over the shoulder" lighting, very dramatic, but a difficult exercise in executing the appropriate shadows.
  • The only other artist we know of who even comes close to this level of mastery of technique is Kawasi Hasui (1883-1957), the Japanese master of Shin Hanga woodblock prints.
  • We could go on; we're long time friends of the artist, and have been devoted fans for decades.
  • The artist, however, speaks quite well for himself on his own website.
  • For more essential information about the artist and this painting, please see www.donaldEdavis.com Space Art.
  • The decade by decade biography is accompanied by illustrations from each period.
  • Check out his sunset photographs, so breathtaking it's hard to believe they actually happened.
