  • A large format spiral-bound sketchbook by Ghislaine Geerts a.k.a. Macha, listed artist and Marimekko designer.
  • Use the eight gallery tabs to view the full notebook contents; the photos below are only a sample.

FORMAT:

  • Sketchbook contains over 30 pages.
  • Large format, size 52cm x 42cm // 21.25 inches x 16.8 inches.
  • Spiral bound with metal spiral.
  • Newsprint weight paper.
  • The majority of pages contain superb original works of art: drawings, sketches, and full size full page ink and watercolor paintings.
  • There are a few blank pages, and a few of the pages have had portions cut out from them.

     

  • TECHNIQUES: The artist renders modern Western subjects (i.e. high heels & boot socks) using ancient Asian art techniques.
  • Techniques include rendering Kacho-e (flower-and-bird pictures) using Haboku and Suiboku ink-based Sumi-e, ancient Japanese ink painting and wash techniques.

     

  • ANNOTATIONS: Many images (but not all) are annotated by the artist with some combination of information, such as date (1961, 1961), place, season, and/or artist's notes.
  • MEDIUMS: Mediums include graphite pencil, Sumi ink, color ink washes, watercolor paint, felt tip ink pens, crayon, and gouache.
  • SUBJECTS: Diverse subject include abstract panels & lettering, cats, sheep, lambs, birds, chickens, hands, still life flowers, landscapes, chairs, shoes, socks, and flautists.

Ghislaine GEERTS a.k.a. MACHA (Uccle, 1933)

  • Ghislaine GEERTS a.k.a. (also known as) under the pseudonym of MACHA (Uccle, 1933).
  • Painter, children's book illustrator, engraving (wood and lino), painter using batik.
  • The painter is exceptionally well listed in numerous arts dictionaries and references.
  • She has a definitive personal style, and a very well established published reputation.
  • Studied the decorative arts at l'Ecole industrielle de Bruxelles, book and magazine illustrations and engravings of La Cambre with J. Minne.
  • Participated in the exposition "Kunst van Vandaag" (Art Today) at the center for study "Alta Ripa" at Outryve in 1967.
  • She designed for the Finnish firm Marimekko and many of her designs for them are still in production, such as the Kevatleikki pattern.
  • She is justly famous for her children's book illustrations, her paintings, engravings and batik designs.
  • She is considered a true genius with her use of the technique of collage during the Eames era and the 1950's.

Provenance Of The Works Offered By Us

  • These works are from the artist's atelier studio in Belgium.

CONDITION:

  • By " antique " we mean over 100 years of age.
  • By " vintage " we mean between 50 and 100 years of age.
  • These paintings are made of matter and they are OLD; this means they are NOT NEW.
  • These are not modern reproductions, they are not recent copies, and they are not fakes..
  • SCROLL DOWN TO SEE PHOTOS.

There are signs of age or usage including but not limited to:

  • There is visible rust to the metal spiral binding the notebook.
  • Some of the metal spiral rust may have migrated to the top of some pages.
  • Some of the pages may be partially detaching from the metal spiral binding.
  • There is some age related browning, freckling, toning, foxing to the paper.
  • The artist has dropped occasional splotches of watercolor or ink on some pages where she clearly did not intend to do so.
  • Some of the pencil sketches show smudges.
  • There is occasional wrinkling and crinkling of the paper.
  • There is wear around the perimeters of all pages and incidental edge and corner folds of the paper.
  • The covers are cardboard and they are soiled.
  • Some pages have small (less then 0.5 inch) tears and/or folds around the edges and corners.
  • There is overall surface wear.
  • There is some overall oxidation.
  • There is some corner and perimeter wear and wear around all edges.
  • There are surface scratches.
  • There are surface scratches.
  • CLEANED: No.
  • RESTORATION: No restoration.
  • MEASUREMENT VERIFIED: Yes.
  • There may also be something that we missed because we aren't specifically trained to see it.
  • We've not examined this notebook microscopically.
  • We've not taken it apart or put it back together.
  • We've not subtracted anything nor added anything that was not already there.
  • The artist made cut outs on some pages; we didn't cut any pages.
  • We've not cleaned this.
  • The condition is good.
  • There's nothing functionally wrong with this.
  • The condition is exactly as shown in the gallery photos.
  • Look at all the gallery photos carefully and read this description carefully.
  • It is impossible to divine exactly what information a buyer might want.
