The Paintings of Edmond Henri Zeiger de Baugy:  ZEIGER-VIALLET MEETS FOLON

Zeiger's watercolor paintings may appear naive and simple at first glance, however they reflect a profound mastery of minimalist symbols. Their emotional effect is not obvious. It's subtle, slow, and serenity accumulates with each subsequent viewing.

These paintings are not "modern art". Modern art implodes the brain from the inside out. It grabs your attention by slamming the door in your face. Modern symbols are meant to be hard to forget because their intent is coercive. They direct your will in their direction, to do what they want you to do. They're bold, blatant brief bursts, abrupt, rude and in your-face. Our culture's manners imitate them.

As a result, modern viewers may miss Zeiger's point entirely. Zeiger's work invites you inward, not outward. By depicting quiet scenes simply, he invokes peace and serenity in you, and you can breath a sigh of relief. His paintings aren't coercive, instead, they invite participation in the simple joys of life.

The renowned Edmond Henri Zeiger de BAUGY (1895 to1994) a.k.a. ZEIGER-VIALLET, painter, designer and architect, had a personal preference for painting in oils  in a classic style. In his later years, however, his work substantially changed as the result of a chance friendship with much younger fellow artist Jean-Michel Folon. The Zeiger watercolors we offer for sale in our eBay store are from this period.

Jean-Michel FOLON (1 March 1934 to 20 October 2005). was a Belgian artist, illustrator, painter, and sculptor, born in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium in 1934. In 1955, when Folon was just 21 and Zeiger 88 years of age, Folon settled in a gardener's house in the outskirts of Paris, near the suburb where the elder Zeiger resided part of each year.

In spite of their substantial age differences, these kindred spirits quickly developed a significant influential friendship. It infused them with a new understanding of art, specifically how to use the fewest possible symbols to invoke emotion and access the mind. Their clarifying effect on one another was similar to hearing distant noise somewhere down the hall from where you are standing. As you walk towards the sound, you hear more and more  details, and eventually realize Ah Hah! It's a quartet playing Bach.

Zeiger developed his style under the influence of The Great Impressionist Umbrella. The young Folon, just beginning his career, was inspired by Zeiger's impressionist approach that used strong color symbolically and to induce mood, Folon began emphasizing bold isolated graphic forms accompanied by strong color. Folon increasingly experimented with taking an isolated single image, enhancing that image in the mind via repetition, and creating the illusion of motion through the power and impact of color.

Folon inspired Zeiger to shift his focus entirely away from primarily using color to evoke shape, symbol and mood. He inspired Zeiger to compose instead with simple definitive shapes and minimal reliance on color. A musical analogy of this process would be to transcribe an orchestral piece into a work for a quartet. Zeiger's work became increasingly minimalist and similar to visual Haiku. He developed a profound skill at producing tangible mood through allusion, juxtaposing the fewest possible symbolic elements.

As two sides of the same coin, Zeiger expressed a more introverted side. Folon expressed a more extroverted side, and as result, he is better known. Both gained a new understanding and mastery of the visual triad: how to evoke reaction using a minimalist approach to shape, heightened significance of single detail, and a pronounced enhancement of color.
