Zev and my father were first cousins; their mothers were sisters. These photos of him and his work were taken by me, Debra Spencer, and his signature is from my personal correspondence.  I gave AskArt my permission to use my photos of Zev and his signature on their site, however, and unfortunately for me, they have done so without crediting them to either myself or to Suit Yourself™ International. Sigh. Oh well. I have the negatives, the correspondence, photos of myself and Zev together, and the memories. Should you have any questions, just email me.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

ZEV has been listed in Akoun and Piron for decades as ZEV, Daniel H. 1924 - 1987. He's in permanent museum and private collections around the world and is family, our cousin. ZEV is a word of Hebrew origin, not Hungarian as some have asserted. ZEV adopted this moniker shortly after World War II and used it thereafter, eschewing the use of his natural name and middle name. Zev was an American, not Polish, nor Hungarian as some have asserted. Since 1953, his permanent residence was in Rome, where he died in 1987, not 1986. He was well-traveled, studied at the Masters Institute of the Roerich Museum in New York City, the National Academy of Design, and the New York University of Art where he also taught. He was invited in 1944 by Grace Morley to exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Art in California. Other exhibits include The Furstenberg Gallery, Paris, The Arthur Jeffress Gallery, London, The Crocker Art Museum. He also designed parts of the interior and the logo for Nepenthe, a well-known location on Northern California's coastal route 1. He is listed in San Francisco And The Second Wave. He exhibited regularly in Europe, particularly France, Spain and Italy, until his death.

  • at the National Academy of Design, and at the New York University of Art where he also taught.
  • He was invited in 1944 by Grace Morley to exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Art in California.
