ABOUT TORTOISE SHELL

  • The shell used in this particular piece is guaranteed to be from a Testudo marginata that died well over 100 years ago.
  • The Conservation status of the marginated tortoise (Testudo marginata) is that of Least Concern (IUCN 2.3).
  • Testudo marginata is a species of tortoise found in Greece, Italy and the Balkans in southern Europe.
  • The Testudo marginata is not now and never has been either endangered or threatened as a species. It wasn't when this was made and it isn't now.
  • A great many turtle species are endangered or threatened but not all of them.

ABOUT NAPOLEON III

  • Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte
  • Full name Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, b.20 April 1808 – d. 9 January 1873
  • First President of the French Republic and the only emperor of the Second French Empire.
  • He holds the unusual distinction of being both the first titular president and the last monarch of France.

ABOUT THE ALLOY

  • The medallion, clasp, and keeper plate are made from a silver alloy.
  • They are not 'silver colored'.
  • We don't know the exact precise composition of the various foreign metals used to make these old foreign alloys.
  • We aren't metallurgists and we cannot ever be 100% certain about anything.
  • Magnets will stick to ferrous metals.
  • Magnets attract to ferrous metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, certain steels and other alloys.
  • Brass, aluminum, copper, and most stainless steels, however, are non ferrous, and magnets are not attracted to them.
  • Alloys are combinations of metals used for practical and artistic reasons such as durability.
  • Using 100% of any metal might make the product result entirely too soft to endure.
  • The term "sterling" refers to a specific amount of silver in an alloy.
  • The term "sterling" refers specifically to an alloy of silver that is 925 parts pure silver and 75 parts copper, thereby increasing the strength of the silver.
  • For more information, please visit your nearest metallurgist, or geologist, or ask at your local library.
